Introduction
Mathematics Extended Module 2 (M2) is a key component of the Hong Kong senior secondary mathematics curriculum, designed for students with a strong interest and high aptitude in mathematics. Focusing on calculus and algebra, this module covers advanced mathematical concepts such as limits, derivatives, integrals, matrices, and vectors. It aims to deepen students’ mathematical knowledge while cultivating their logical reasoning, analytical skills, and problem-solving abilities. M2 not only provides a solid foundation for university studies in STEM fields such as engineering, physics, and computer science but also enhances students’ quantitative application skills to meet the technological demands of modern society.
Goals
1. Knowledge and Skills:
• Equip students with a theoretical understanding of calculus and algebra, enabling them to apply these concepts flexibly to real-world problems such as optimization, kinematics analysis, and data modeling.
• Develop rigorous mathematical reasoning skills, including logical proofs, abstract thinking, and precise mathematical communication.
2. Thinking and Attitudes:
• Enhance students’ critical thinking by encouraging them to analyze problems mathematically and explore diverse solutions.
• Foster perseverance in learning, cultivating patience and confidence when facing challenges.
3. Application and Connections:
• Establish a strong foundation for university-level studies in mathematics, physics, engineering, and other STEM disciplines.
• Develop the mathematical thinking and research skills necessary for higher education.
• Master essential mathematical tools required for advancements in modern science and technology.
Activities
